The importance of scaling down (as well as up)

This group has particular needs well suited to the design, but they have to keep the system costs down, and are willing to trade some aspects of design for cost. So we worked on it, and came out with a unit that should be able to provide about 8 TB for about 9k$ US. Ballpark. Performance won’t be as good as the higher end units, but in scaling it down, it looks like it might be fine for them. We still need to talk them into either 64-bit linux or windows for the computing side, but apart from that, scaling the systems down to their needs without compromising more important design elements relevant to them, enables them to do more with less.
